Who We Are
We are the “Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa (CCCAS);” known in our native Samoa as, o le “Ekalesia Faapotopotoga Kerisiano i Amerika Samoa (EFKAS).”
We are a fellowship of more than 100 Samoan Christian congregations located in American Samoa, the United States, New Zealand and Australia. We are united in our passion to love God, to faithfully follow Jesus Christ, and to rely on the guidance of the Holy Spirit in carrying out our mission to the world, in and through our ministry in serving the Samoan Christian community.
As a fellowship of Samoan Christian congregations, our roots can be traced back to the year 1830, when a group of missionaries from the London Missionary Society (LMS) arrived on the shores of Samoa to preach the Gospel. Led by the Rev. John Williams, these LMS missionaries successfully established themselves and proceeded to spread the Gospel all throughout the Samoan islands. In the process, the first Christian church was established in Samoa, known formally as the ‘Samoan Church LMS.’ Locals referred to it simply as the ‘Lotu Ta’iti” (Tahitian church), signifying the place that Rev. John Williams and his group of LMS missionaries originated from prior to arriving in Samoa.
In 1961, after more than 100 years since its establishment, the name ‘Samoan Church LMS’ was changed to the ‘Congregational Christian Church of Samoa (CCCS).’ In 1980, when the local congregations in American Samoa sought independence from those in (Western) Samoa, the fruits of this independence resulted in adopting the name “Congregational Christian Church of American Samoa (CCCAS),” which we continue to carry til this day. Since our inception, the CCCAS has firmly established herself in American Samoa, the United States, New Zealand and Australia.
As a fellowship of Samoan Christian believers, the following are a few of the basic beliefs that lie at the heart of our Christian faith. With the “Apostle’s Creed” laying the foundation, we also believe that:
- Jesus Christ, the Head of the Church, is Lord and Savior; who reigns over all and cares over all;
- The Holy Scriptures, the Old and New Testaments, is the ultimate source of authority for Christian living, which includes all that is necessary for salvation;
- The ministry is a gift of God, through Christ for His Church, given to us for the betterment of life and the service of all humanity. We believe the Church represents God to humanity in its testimony and loving service to people. We believe the Church also represents the world before God through her prayers of thanksgiving and praise, confession and intercession;
- Corporate worship to God is the very core in the life of the congregation, for the Church is the fellowship of those who have covenanted to live harmoniously in new life, through their common faith, nourished by grace. We believe that by worshiping God, members of the Church are enriched and edified in faith, through prayers, hymns, hearing of the Word and partaking in the Sacraments.
